The city of Toronto has been home to many historic hotels and concert venues over the past seventy years. Many of these landmarks established themselves amongst the penultimate places to experience both live music and the truest sense of Toronto’s culture. Whether it was Hotel Isabella, or the El Mocambo on Spadina, listeners from all walks of life came to experience something special.
Isabella, named after the famed “Hotel Isabella”, is meant as an offering to Torontonian’s. The mastermind behind this project is Normand Carrey, a Psychiatrist now residing in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Carrey studied in Toronto in the 70’s and was fortunate to have experienced many of these establishments in their truest form. While not amongst his medical books in his grungy apartment in the Spadina Annex, Normand could be found most often soaking up this spirited Toronto bar scene, ounce after ounce.
Andrew Miller (composition, drums) spent some of his most important years developing in Toronto. There he studied music and was fortunate enough to witness and play with many of the city’s great artists. His compositions are inspired by vignettes Normand wrote about each individual venue.
Danforth is the first single released today under the project title Isabella as part of a full-length album to be released later this year. All of the music was recorded separately by the individual musicians at their various households in Nova Scotia and produced, mixed and mastered by Patrick Reid.
This recording also features:
Kenji Omae (tenor saxophone) - has recently moved back from South Korea where he lived and taught for many years. He is now working and teaching at St. Francis of Xavier university in Antigonish, Nova Scotia.
David Reid (keyboards, electronics) - attended McGill’s music program and writes for his solo project “The Pale King”. David is about to start graduate school in Psychology.
Patrick Reid (bass, production, mixing) - is also a graduate from McGill’s music program and has recently moved to Halifax after spending much of the last decade in New York.
